Trail Lab held its annual Skimo competition, where participants race on skis with special bindings that have a "walking" mode, and skins are attached to the underside to allow for uphill climbing.
The race is usually held in April, starting from Gergeti Church and ending at least at Altihut, in Stepantsminda, with views of Mount Kazbek. However, in winter, the trail from the Sabertse Pass is quite dangerous due to avalanche risks, which has caused the race to be canceled a couple of times. Perhaps that’s why this year they decided to host it in the more reliable Gudauri.
It would’ve been wrong not to participate, especially living here!
There weren’t many participants, likely due in part to the fact that it was held in Gudauri. After all, Skimo is more exciting when the race takes place off-piste in untouched snow. But it was still fun, and hopefully not the last time. Plus, there are plenty of off-piste routes that can be explored in Gudauri as well. It was a blast, and the weather was perfect!
