Jvari, or Cross Pass (2,379 meters), is part of the Georgian Military Road and traverses the Main Caucasus Ridge. In winter, it often becomes blocked by avalanches, leaving hundreds of cars unable to travel to and from Russia for days.
From Gudauri to Cross Pass, it's approximately 6-8 km by road. The pass got its name in 1824 when a cross was installed to mark the route.
When you run or drive to Jvari, you pass another famous attraction: the Russian-Georgian Friendship Monument. Erected by the Soviets in 1983, this monument was designed by the renowned Georgian architect Giorgi. It is situated in a location that offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape, including the impressive Devil’s Gorge.
The massive round “friendship” monument overlooks Devil’s Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. The nearest peak, Deda Ena (3,500 m), can be seen in the distance. Throughout the year, tourists from around the world visit this site, and it rarely stays without guests.
Now, about the trail to Cross Pass: you don’t need to stick to the military road. There are numerous technical roads in the mountains used for maintaining electricity, water, and gas facilities. These paths are wide, not steep, and quite comfortable for a relaxing run.
I start from my house, take all the dogs that want to join me, and run slightly uphill toward the Russian border. The first half of the path is very easy, with gentle ups and downs. The second part, after the Friendship Monument, features a steeper ascent to Cross Pass. Depending on your fitness level or goals, it can take between 20 to 40 minutes to run from Gudauri to the Pass. This route is great for a recovery day. However, if you're looking for more of a challenge on the return, you can climb up to the hills of Mt. Bidara instead of taking the same path back.
