Think you can't go hiking in winter? Well, that’s partially true – but snowshoeing is a fun and easy alternative for a non-skiing day.
We began our half-day snowshoeing trip from the upper lift station to avoid the crowds speeding down the slopes. February is a busy month, and even off-piste areas aren't safe for hiking uphill. So, we took the gondola and then strapped on our snowshoes, setting off toward the always-closed summit of Sadzeli volcano.
The first part of the trek was relatively easy as we walked along the blue piste. It became more challenging as we reached the traverse to Sadzeli's summit, which is steeper than the surrounding slopes. Fortunately, the trail had been groomed by snowcats, so snowshoes weren’t entirely necessary. Still, they added a bit of difficulty to the walk, which made for good stamina training.

The weather was perfect, and from the top of Sadzeli, we enjoyed incredible views of the entire Kobi Valley, the Kazbegi summit, the impressive Sherkhota volcano, and other stunning landscapes in the area.
Itinerary: We started at the gondola lift in New Gudauri and walked along the blue piste toward Sadzeli. From there, we continued between Sadzeli and Kudebi, turning left onto the Sadzeli traverse.
Surface conditions: After snowfall, the trail is often buried, so snowshoes are essential. We were fortunate that the path had been groomed, making it firm and manageable.
Timing: Approximately 1.5 hours up, and 40 minutes down.
